  17. <p>     An American soldier of fortune named Jack Terrell, who once
  18. worked for the contra rebels in Nicaragua, created a political
  19. storm in the Philippines last week when he implicated Foreign
  20. Secretary Raul Manglapus in a bizarre plot to murder a handful
  21. of President Corazon Aquino's opponents, including rebel
  22. Colonel Gregorio ("Gringo") Honasan.
  23. </p>
  24. <p>     Aquino defended her Foreign Secretary as "an uncomplicated
  25. man" who would never contemplate murder. Manglapus, a droll
  26. diplomat who once set his thoughts on U.S.-Philippine relations
  27. to music in a theatrical comedy called Yanky Panky, denied the
  28. allegations.

  30. <p>     But the drama will probably not be short-lived. Opposition
  31. Senator Juan Ponce Enrile, who is running for President, called
  32. for a Senate investigation that could easily last until
  33. elections are held in May 1992.
